Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
The EPSRC is responsible for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences which includes mathematics, material science, information and computer technologies, chemistry, physics and engineering.
EPSRC offers postgraduate funding through Doctoral Training Accounts which are allocated directly to universities. Some research awards are available in collaboration with industry. Candidates should not apply directly to EPSRC but rather indicate that they wish to be considered for a studentship on their postgraduate application form.
EPSRC also fund Masters studentships by two routes. If a Masters programme is intended to act, or historically has acted, primarily as a preparation for doctoral training, then the Doctoral Training Account (DTA) is the most appropriate source of EPSRC funding. Where masters-level training is intended to enable the better exploitation of the research that EPSRC funds, then it should be funded through the Knowledge Transfer Account (KTA) route. For further information, please contact the appropriate School for details.
The minimum academic requirement for an award is an upper second-class Honours degree or the equivalent. For MPhil/PhD awards, some research councils require candidates to have completed a formal Master's research training programme.
