The University of Edinburgh Accommodation Bursaries

The University of Edinburgh will offer up to 90 bursaries to first year undergraduate UK students who will be living in University accommodation during the 2010-2011 academic session. Each bursary will have a value of £1,000 which will be paid directly to Accommodation Services towards the costs of your accommodation and will be tenable for one academic session.

Eligibility

The bursaries are awarded on the basis of significant financial need, but the University will also take account of other personal or family circumstances which might make it difficult for you to take up a University place. In awarding these bursaries no account will be taken of academic merit, since it is assumed that those who receive an offer of a place have fully demonstrated their ability and potential to benefit from Higher Education.

Applicants must be:

  • UK students entering their first year of an undergraduate degree
  • intending to live in University accommodation during the 2010-2011 academic session
  • expecting to receive the full Young Students bursary for Scottish students OR full maintenance grant for English and Northern Ireland students OR full Assembly learning grant for Welsh students.

Applicants should have applied through UCAS, should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so. Accepting the University of Edinburgh as an insurance offer does not satisfy the conditions relating to this bursary.

Application Procedure

Candidates may complete an online bursary application, or request one to be sent to them from:

The Scholarships and Student Finance Office
The University of Edinburgh
Old College
South Bridge
Edinburgh EH8 9YL

E-mail: financial.aid@ed.ac.uk
Fax: +44 131 651 4066
Telephone:+44 131 651 4070

Completed applications should be received by the Scholarships and Student Finance Office by the closing date of 1 April 2010.

Please note that the application form for Accommodation bursaries is the same as the Access Bursary application. When applying for an Accommodation Bursary you can apply for a University Access Bursary at the same time. If you apply for both bursaries only one supporting reference is required.

Please also note that applying for an Accommodation Bursary is completely separate from making an application for University accommodation. In order to apply for University accommodation, please visit the Accommodation Services website which can be found at www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergraduate/accommodation/

Supporting Reference

Guidelines for Applicants

You need to nominate someone who is familiar with the background to your application and with your financial, personal or family circumstances and who will write a reference in support of your bursary application. This might be someone from your school or college (normally but not necessarily the Head Teacher or Principal), or another appropriate professional such as a social worker or GP. As we require independent verification of the general content of your application, the supporting reference should not be supplied by a member of your immediate family.

Please ask your referee to either e-mail the supporting reference to financial.aid@ed.ac.uk or post it to the Scholarships and Student Finance Office at the address above. The reference should clearly state your name and UCAS number.

Guidelines for Referees

The supporting reference is crucial to the selection process and you are asked to provide as much information as possible. You should make specific reference to any financial need such as in the case of applicants from families with a very low income or in receipt of benefits; as well as personal or family circumstances which might jeopardise the applicant's ability to progress to Higher Education. This may include for example such things as responsibility for the care of dependents, and/or other adverse personal circumstances not conducive to study.

Please state clearly the applicant's name and UCAS number along with your name and the capacity in which you are familiar with the applicant, and submit your reference either by e-mail to financial.aid@ed.ac.uk or by post to the Scholarships and Student Finance Office at the address above.

All information provided for bursary applications is confidential and is used solely for the purposes of bursary selection. This information does not affect the academic selection process for a place at the University of Edinburgh.

Notification of Award

All applicants will be contacted by e-mail either in early May. If your application for a bursary is successful, you must meet the following conditions to receive an award:

  • unconditional offer and subsequent matriculation
  • be awarded the full Young Student's Bursary OR full Maintenance Grant OR full Assembly Learning Grant
  • take up offer of University accommodation

A reserve list will be held until all awards have been confirmed to matriculated students.

To apply for Student Support from your local award authority please refer to the Student Support section at www.scholarships.ed.ac.uk/undergraduate for further information.
